Granada, experienced from within
Granada welcomes all kinds of students, from aspiring scientists to future artists, from quiet readers to restless explorers. With its mix of academic excellence, cultural depth, and everyday beauty, the city offers endless ways to learn, grow, and feel part of something bigger. Whatever their path, students find Granada both exciting and deeply human.
Granada is no longer defined solely by its past. It’s emerging as a key player in science, technology, and health innovation. The Parque Tecnológico de la Salud (PTS) brings together research centers, biotech firms, and the new university hospital, forming one of Spain’s most dynamic biomedical ecosystems. It’s a space where academic research meets real-world application.
The city is also home to IFMIF-DONES, a major international project in nuclear fusion that will place Granada at the forefront of energy research. Institutions like the Parque de las Ciencias (Spain’s most visited science museum) and strong STEM programs at the University of Granada reflect a broader commitment: to generate new knowledge and prepare students for the challenges ahead.
Granada’s history spans millennia, marked by the convergence of civilizations. Its streets, monuments, and traditions preserve stories that reach back to ancient times, forming a living record of a city that constantly evolves. Granada’s layered history emerges in the alleys of the old Jewish quarter of the Realejo, the enduring beauty of the Muslim Alhambra and Nasrid palaces, and later Christian monuments such as the Cathedral and Royal Chapel that reshaped the city.
Diverse traditions blended into a vibrant tapestry, one that survives not in isolation, but in the city’s arcflourisheshitecture, rhythms of daily life, and enduring spirit of openness. Granada did not merely tolerate difference, it thrived on it. Today, that legacy is not a relic of the past but a defining trait of the city itself: a place where heritage is both preserved and continuously reimagined.
I became self-aware of my surroundings and I became a better citizen of the world. I strongly recommend the GRIIS program to future students.
Living there for the semester gave me a true taste of the laid-back Andalucian culture and a better appreciation for the immense history behind the city.
The opportunities presented to me through GRIIS were what really helped me and guided me to a deeper understanding of Spain as well as a deeper understanding of myself.
